Naoko Takeuchi used a lot of different myths to write Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon. Greek, Roman, and Japanese are the main themes, seen. This section looks at most, if not all, of the mythology that can be found in Sailormoon. Please enjoy, and I hope you learn something!

Greek:

Greek is the most used mythology in Sailormoon. For instance, Serenity, Endymion, and Helios were based on Greek Mythology.

SELENE and ENDYMIONSERENITY and ENDYMION Selene was the goddess of the Moon, and she was said to have a crecent moon on her forehead. Serenity is the Queen of the Moon (and princess, and queen of moon and earth), and has a crecent moon on her forehead, although it looks a bit different. Selene was known for her numerous love affairs, with the most famous being Endymion, the shepard (there is dispute about whether he was a shepard or a king). He was given the choice between mortality and immortality, and he chose to never age or die, but to sleep forever. Selene gave birth to 50 daughters by Endymion (here is a contrast, the Serenity who fell in love with Endymion in Sailormoon only had one daughter). For an explanation of the name Serenity, see What's In a Name?

GOD HELIOSBSSM HELIOS In Greek myth, Helios was the god of the sun, and brother of Selene. Every morning, after their sister, Eos (the goddess of the dawn), shed her light, Helios would mount his golden chariot (as apposed to Selene's silver chariot), and begin his flight across the sky. In BSSM, Elios was a priest, and the guardian of the land called Elysion. Elysion is a land in another dimension, connected to Earth in a way that if Elysion is distroyed, then so is Earth. Elios is connected to Endymion, the prince/king of Earth. As you can see, the Greek and the BSSM stories are very different. For more information on Elios, please see Romance in the Twighlight

GODDESS ARTEMISGUARDIAN ARTEMIS Artemis was a Greek goddess of virginity, and fertility. She was often depicted with a silver crescent moon on her forehead, and therefore was associated with Selene. Artemis was the twin sister of Appollo, and both were hunters. When young, Artemis asked Zues to grant her eternal virginity, and she was said to kill anyone who tried to sully her innocense. In BSSM, Artemis was a male, guardian cat of the moon, and Sailorvenus's pet. He was white, with a gold crescent moon on his forehead, and he stood for the peace of the moon.

AMAZONS AMAZONESS QUARTET [JUN-JUN] The Amazons were women who were ruff, tuff, and cut off their right breasts so they could use a bow and arrow (their chief weapon) more efficiently. They were great hunters, and worshipped Artemis. Naoko's Amazoness Quartet were a group of four girls in the Dead Moon Circus (bad guys) who wore skimpy clothing and had magic orbs, and powers. They later turned good, and became the Asteroid senshi, and guardians of Small Lady.

Chronos: [No Picture Available] Chronos in Greek mythology was the god of time, also known as "Father Time." Chronos in BSSM was Sailorpluto's father. Sailorpluto had the attack "Chronos Typhoon" which was done with her garnet orb.

Daimons: [No Picture Available] Daimons mean "demons" in Greek, and the Greek believed that there were two types of demons: good ones that offered guidance, and bad ones that led people astray. The Daimons that the Sailor Soldiers faught were evil monsters produced by Professor Tomoe and his minions.

Lethe: [No Picture Available] The Greek Lethe was one of the rivers that flowed through the realm of Hades. It means "forgetfulness." In BSSM, Lethe is one of the Witches 5.

Mnemosyne: [No Picture Available] The Greek Mnemosyne was the personification of memory. In Sailormoon, she is one of the Witches 5.

Nemesis: [No Picture Available] Nemisis in Greek mythology was the goddess of vengeance. In SM, it is the 10th planet, found during the 30th century, from which dark energy eminates, and a group of outcasts called the "Dark Moon Family" come from, and try to get revenge on earth.

THE SIRENS SAILOR ALUMINUM SIREN In Greek, the Sirens were women who lived in the sea, and sang beautiful songs that enchanted and lured the sailors to their deaths. Sailor Aluminum Siren is one of the Sailor Animamates, an enemy in the 5th "season."
